1. 봉사그룹을 소개해 주세요. Brief introduction of Korea International Volunteers Group

- Our group members are mostly foreigners living in Korea and bilingual Koreans, and help those people going through difficult times in life. Our group started our first volunteering to feed homeless people at Garak Market Homeless Center on December 24, 2011, and now have almost one thousand members.

 

우리 봉사그룹은 한국에 거주하는 외국인들과 영어와 한국어를 할 수 있는 한국인들로 구성되어 있어요. 그리고 인생에서 어려운 시기를 겪고 있는 사람들을 돕는 일을 하죠. 그렇게 2011년 12월 24일에 가락 시장의 노숙인 들에게 식사를 제공하는 봉사활동을 시작으로 현재는 1,000여명의 봉사자들이 함께 하고 있어요.

2. 창단 배경이 있나요? Why did you found this group?

– In a big concept, it’s a global village family in Korea that helps those people going through difficult times, and giving some of what they’ve earned in Korea back to the Korean society. Many Koreans go abroad to volunteer in foreign countries these days but it’s true that underprivileged people exist inside of Korea as well. I founded this multinational, multicultural volunteer group for many expats who’d like to volunteer in Korea but can’t find a good opportunity because of language and cultural barriers, and stay as good citizen while living in Korea. Some drunken foreigners occasionally cause problems in Korea but many foreigners are good humans, and would like to help the underprivileged people like they used to help in their own countries. Our members not only learn Korean culture and language but also meet warmhearted Korean friends while volunteering through our group.

 

비유하자면, 한국 봉사자 모임은 어려운 시기를 겪고 있는 분들을 도와주면서 한국에서 얻은 것을 다시 한국 사회에 환원 하는 사람들이 모인 하나의 글로벌 마을이라고 볼 수 있어요.

요즘에는 많은 한국 사람들이 봉사활동을 위해 해외를 가는데, 아직 한국에도 제대로 혜택을 누릴 수 없는 사람들이 많이 존재한답니다. 그래서 저는 한국에서 봉사활동을 하길 원하지만 언어의 장벽에 부딪혀 기회를 쉽게 얻지 못하거나, 한국에서 지내는 동안 좋은 시민이 되길 원하는 글로벌 친구들을 위해 다국적, 다문화 봉사모임을 만든 거예요. 가끔씩 술에 취한 외국인들이 한국에서 문제를 일으켜 외국인을 보는 시각이 좋지 않은 경우도 있지만 사실 많은 외국인들은 따뜻한 마음을 가지고 있답니다. 그리고 그들이 자신의 나라에서 돕곤 했던 혜택을 받지 못하는 사람들을 위해 한국에서도 같은 일을 하고 싶어하죠. 우리 봉사자들은 한국의 문화와 언어를 배울 뿐만 아니라 봉사활동을 통해 마음이 따뜻한 사람들과 친구가 될 수 있답니다.

3. 어떤 봉사자들이 참여하나요? Who are your volunteer members? 

- Most of our members are expat volunteers from all over the world. We have volunteer members from a variety of countries and backgrounds. There are North and South Americans, Europeans, Africans, and other Asians from many different countries. We have native English teachers, international students, multinational corporations’ employees, doctors, scholars, and even some tourists shortly visiting Korea. Our youngest member is a 7th grader middle school student attending an international school in Seoul and our oldest is in her 60s. Lately, many Korean volunteers began joining our group because they can volunteer with people from all over the world, meet international friends, learn foreign languages and culture, and gain experiences in working with foreigners in an international and multicultural environment. 

 

우리 모임에는 북미, 남미, 유럽, 아프리카, 아시아의 많은 다양한 나라에서 온 다양한 국적과 배경을 가진 봉사자들이 대부분이고 또한 사원, 의사, 학자 등 다양한 직업을 가진 사람들이 많죠. 심지어는 단기여행을 위해 한국에 머무르는 동안 오는 사람들도 있답니다. 가장 어린 봉사자는 서울의 국제 중학교를 다니는 1학년 학생이고 가장 연장자는 60대의 어르신이랍니다. 최근에는 다양한 나라에서 온 친구들과 봉사활동을 하기 위해서 혹은 다국적 문화에서 외국인들과 일하는 기회를 얻고싶거나 외국인 친구를 만나고 외국어를 배우고 싶어 모임에 참여하는 사람들도 부쩍 늘었답니다.

 

4. 주로 어떤 봉사활동을 하고 계신가요? What kind of volunteering activities is your group participating in?

- We regularly help and take care of orphan children, runaway teenagers, and multicultural families, feed homeless people, and teach English to children from low income families. We’ve also participated in helping farmers and mentally challenged children. Sooner or later, we’ll begin helping centers for the mentally and physically disabled, silver homes for low income or single senior citizen, animal shelters, and teaching Korean language and culture to foreigners who desire learning Korean but don’t know how to.

 

정기적으로 고아원에 가서 아이들을 돕기도 하고 방황하고 있는 청소년들과 다문화 가정의 아이들을 돕기도 하고 노숙인 들에게 식사를 제공하기도 하고 저소득층의 자녀들에게 영어를 가르치는 활동을 하기도 하죠. 또 농부들을 돕거나 지적 장애아들을 돕는 일을 하기도 했답니다. 그리고 조만간 정신적으로 혹은 신체적으로 장애를 가진 사람들을 위한 시설과 저소득 혹은 가족이 없는 어르신들을 위한 시설, 그리고 동물 보호시설에도 가서 봉사를 시작할 거예요. 또한 한국어를 배우고 싶지만 어떻게 해야 할 지 모르는 외국인들을 위해 한국어와 한국 문화를 가르쳐 주는 일도 시작하려고 합니다.

5. 활동을 진행하면서 봉사자들에게 어떤 감동을 느끼시나요? How do the volunteers impress you?

- Their unconditional hard work, time, and genuine intent to help others deeply impress me. Most of our volunteer members work during weekdays but come volunteer with us on weekend or after a long day of work. I admire and appreciate their volunteerism to help others in the early morning and sometimes late night, and feel so happy and rewarding about their volunteering.

  

 한 주 내내 힘들게 일했음에도 불구하고 주말에는 쉬지 않고 타인을 돕겠다는 심성을 타고난 사람들로 부터 감동을 많이 받아요. 우리 봉사자들의 대부분은 주중에 일을 하고 주말에는 우리와 함께 봉사활동을 하기 위해 오죠. 아침일찍 혹은 저녁늦게 봉사활동을 할 때도 있는데 그럼에도 불구하고 봉사활동을 한 후 행복해 하고 보람을 느끼는 모습을 볼 때 마다 그들의 타고난 Volunteerism에 대해 감명을 받고 그 부분을 정말 존경하죠.

 

6. 그럼 봉사자들은 어떤 감동을 느끼고 가나요? What kind of impressions do your volunteers bring home with?

- I believe many of our volunteer members go home happy after working hard to help those underprivileged people. They feel like they’ve done something meaningful and valuable while living in Korea. To many of them, Korea’s their second home, and they appreciate what Korea has offered to them, such as Korea’s beautiful nature, good people, job opportunities, and learning interesting new culture, etc. In another aspect, expats belong to the minority in the Korean society. They become victims of prejudice, discrimination, and misunderstanding at times. In our group, they can volunteer in a multicultural environment with the fellow expat volunteers as well as our warmhearted bilingual Korean members who’re willing to help our expat volunteers, so they can volunteer with ease and peace of mind. Our members like KIV because it is an organization not oriented toward any political, religious, or commercial purpose.

 

제가 보기에는 많은 봉사자들이 혜택을 받지 못한 사람들을 열심히 돕고 행복해 하며 집으로 돌아가는 것 같아요. 그들은 자신들이 한국에서 사는 동안 굉장히 의미있고 값진 일을 한다고 생각하죠. 외국인들에게 한국은 제2의 고향이고 그들은 한국의 아름다운 자연, 사람들, 취직, 재미있는 문화를 배울 수 있는 기회 등 한국이 주는 많은 것들에게 항상 감사해 하죠. 하지만 그들이 가끔 한국 사회의 괜한 선입견과 차별, 오해들로 인해 안타까운 희생자가 되곤 하죠. 우리 모임에서는 외국인 봉사자들과 영어-한국어를 동시에 하면서 외국인 봉사자들이 쉽고 편안하게 봉사활동을 할 수 있도록 도와주는 마음이 따뜻한 사람들이 함께 다문화 환경속에서 즐겁게 봉사활동을 할 수 있죠. 외국인 자원봉사자들이 우리 그룹을 좋아하는 이유는 정치, 종교, 상업적인 목적을 지양하기 때문입니다.

7. 어떤 단체가 되길 바라나요? What’s your group’s goal?

- My goal is simple. Help more people by more volunteers! As you’d agree, Korea’s becoming more multicultural and globalized year by year. It’s not just a trend anymore but a direction of where the Korean society is heading. I believe that the diverse ethnic and national background of the members of Korea International Volunteers Group (한국국제봉사회) can help many areas and people of Korean society that other traditional Korean volunteer groups may not effectively reach or help. Therefore, Korea International Volunteer Group may not only become a forum that many foreigners in Korea can be happier by contributing their time and talents to help those underprivileged people in Korea but also function as an indispensable tool to help mediate and reconcile conflicts and disputes that may arise in a more complex global community as in future Korea. These outcomes and experiences may help foreigners cherish their time and memories in Korea as more positive and rewarding ones even after they go back to their country.

 

저의 목표는 단순해요. 더 많은 봉사자들이 더 많은 사람들을 돕는 것! 더 많은 사람들이 이에 동의할 수록 한국은 해마다 더욱 다문화적이고 글로벌 적인 나라가 될 거예요. 이것은 단순한 일시적 유행에 그칠 것이 아니라 한국 사회가 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향이예요. 저는 다양한 민족적, 국가적 배경을 지닌 한국 국제 봉사회의 봉사자들이 다른 전통적인 봉사모임들이 돕지 못했던 사람들과 지역을 도울 수 있을 거라고 확신해요. 그렇기 때문에 한국 국제 봉사회는 아마도 많은 사람들이 그들의 시간과 재능을 할애하여 행복해 질 수 있는 기회를 얻는 포럼이 될 뿐만 아니라 미래 한국의 글로벌 커뮤니티에서 일어 날 수 있는 분쟁 혹은 갈등들을 중재하고 조정할 수 있는 없어서는 안될 중요한 도구로써 기능하게 될 거예요. 이러한 결과들과 경험들은 아마도 외국인들이 그들의 나라로 돌아가서 조차 간직할 한국에서의 소중한 시간과 기억이 될 것이예요
